Pat,

My joining of the Clay Art group began yesterday. My e-mail has been
filled
with topics non-related to clay discussions/potters/artistic curiosity/th=
e
search for knowledge/artistic dilemma, etc., which are the reasons I join=
ed
this group of persons with what I thought were "like" interests/expertise=
.

Welcome to the list. =

It might help for you to think of the CLAYART list like a potluck supper
after the world's largest potter's guild meeting. In the huge room all
sorts of conversations are going on with smaller groups participating. =

Let's see............

Tony is over in one corner duking it out with some guy named Larry until
they both throw up, while others watch and cheer one or the other on. =
=

Vince is talking to a group about how to make a simple tool from a safety=

pin, two Q-tip ear swabs, and some dental floss that will save them 6,000=

hours of work in the studio a year. Ron is wandering around asking
everyone if they have the molecular analysis for Frit R-200-3456789, eh.
Arti is surprising everyone around him with a side they hadn't seen=

before . John H. is going around handing out lemon slices to everyone=

holding a pot. David is busy turning a wood table in the corner int=
o
a slab roller utilizing a metal waste basket, cord curtain pulls, 6 used
nails, and the steering wheel from Tony's car. Nils is politely
hittin' on Dannon, who is wearing a flouncy skirt and cowboy boots. =

Merri is squirting lighter fluid on flaming logs and then chucking them
into the firebox while Jimi is on the stereo playing "Purple Haze" at 110=

db. Joyce is carefully and gently wrapping a bandage on Russel's
knuckles where the square bat clipped him. Mayor mel, munching on
some ludefisk sushi, is in the center of the room quickly "cutting to the=

chase" with a group talking about throwing, and all the while listening t=
o
everything going on in the room. Some strange guy no one seems to
know is over in a dark corner talking about how we should all beef up the=

security around our kiln's propane tanks in light of the events on
September 11th. And there is a small group in very odd clothes ne=
ar
the stereo doing some sort of strange dance to hideous music, while littl=
e
transparent spheres float all around them. =

Anyway... like with any large group of peole....... all these
conversations are going on at once. You can only focus on so much.......=

so you get involved in what interests you at the time, and tune out the
rest. Message headers are the key to making CLAYART managable at 120 to=

200K of stuff a day.

And in some ways it is better than a potluck ....... because the room is
"bugged" by the "big brother authorities" and all the conversations are
being recorded!!!!! Just look in the archives to find something later th=
at
you might have missed at the time.

You'll find a HUGE wealth of knowledge here...... and make some good
friendships. Hang in there for a while.....and get to know us . As
Elton John said in a song...... " weird and wonderful".

Best,

..............................john
