smoke in the garage

updated tue 2 oct 01

i spent a post early this a.m. but haven't seen it come across on line so i
apologize if this comes as a repeat to some.

i woke up with a garage full of smoke after firing my skutt with enviro vent
on and according to engineer husband functioning properly. HOWEVER i forgot
to open the garage door while firing. never forgot before. does it always
produce smoke and i never knew it because the door was open or is this a bad
sign something is wrong? pretty sure no critters were in there. i opened
the kiln minutes ago and everything looks noraml. TIA for any wisdom words.

Becky,

Maybe this is a foolish thought (and count on
it--someone will say so if they think it is), but
how airtight is your garage? I mean, if the garage
door is shut, can any air get in, anywhere? Do you
have it weatherstripped and caulked up to the max?
If so, maybe you need to leave a window cracked
open to allow influx of air so the envirovent
won't be trying to create a vacuum when it pulls
the air out of the kiln and shoots it into the
outer atmosphere.

BTW, if this is the case, you'd also want to be
extra careful about automobile exhaust, etc.

I had a similar thing happen except with an overhead hood in the basement.
apparently from the soot mark in the floor shelf, I had dropped a pencil or
cleanup tool in without noticing and the basement filled up with smoke enought to
set off the smoke alarm, my family was thrilled to be woken up this way at 8 AM
on a sat morning. one other time the exturnal opening from the vent got blocked
by some yard debris, leaves and paper that built up behind the bushes. that is my
$.02 worth.

Millie in Md. struggleing to process the unbelievable ammount of apples that 2
dwarf apple trees can produce. I will try to hide away some tins of dried apple
chips for NCECA

I don't think that is normal. Was anything new..like some protective
coating burning off?
Wax can smoke if you used it while glazing. I'd be caustious during the
next firing and see where it is coming from.

dear becky,
with the door closed the garage may be sealed enough that the fan was
struggling as there was insufficient make-up air to flow freely. hope it
was that simple.
btw, i think scrubs might be the fashion statement you were seeking.

I, too, have an environvent. Had my studio in the house for years and would
have thought the house on fire and called 911 had I ever had your
experience. Have never had smoke...It would frighten me. Call or contact
the manufacturer. Doesn't sound good to me... Pottermim
