Dear Bruce, I am engaged in saltfiring in India. I
have encountered the problem that you have stated a
number of times. The tiles that we manufacture have
come out rough and low salted many times. I have put
those tiles for a second firing and they have always
come back as good pieces. Though this problem is there
in my kiln. about 5 % of the total tiles fired always
receive either little salt or they are porous because
they havent received good temperature due to the
temperature variation in my huge downdraft kilns. So
with me this is a regular phenomenon. I always put
those tiles to be fired again and they come out with a
beautiful salt glaze .
Do let me know if when your problem is solved
Regards,
Vivek from the state of Gujarat in India.

Can a salt glazed piece be refired?
The last batch of pieces that we had salt fired did not reach full
temperature. The surface of each piece is rough and we have found that the
clay is so porous yet that mold can grow on it. What would happen if these
pieces were refired? If we do get them refired, should they go back in the
salt kiln or, now that they have somewhat of a salt glaze on them, should
they simply be refired to maturity without the salt?

Bruce,
This happen to me last year. I tried to squeeze another firing out of a worn
out salt kiln, and didn't get to temp. I refired several pieces in a
different kiln that had never been exposed to salt. The pieces still looked
salted and aesthetically I was pleased, but the clay body had trapped too
much carbon, compromising the strength. Since I do functional ware this was
a concern for me.
A question for someone else on the list would be: Would doing an oxidized
firing the second go around, solve this carbon issue?
