Yes. It costs a large amount of money. If there is some kind
of grant or subsidy for a juried/competitive exhibit, the gallery
will sometimes cover the cost of RETURN shipping/insurance.
If an exhibit has 100 pieces at an AVERAGE shipping/insurance
cost of $30, that's $3000. So most need that money to pay the
juror and prizes. If the gallery "sponsoring" the exhibition is
one of those that has an "exhibit" every month or so, juried
by unknown persons, on some theme or other - then they
want the money because it keeps the gallery going. In either
case return shipping is most often up to the participant.

Several exhibition prospectuses (prospecti?) stipulate that the artist is
responsible for all shipping charges. On the other hand, shipping is
charged to the gallery or retailer under a wholesale contract.

Is there a reason why the gallery would not cover shipping in the case of a
competitive exhibition?

Thanks

most of them don't
sometimes they will cover return shipping, but often not even that. just
seems to fall on the artist responsibility list, like entry fees, etc....
