Carol,
I sometimes throw a chuck the size I need on the wheel, clean the moisture
off and lay a couple of pieces of cut to size newspaper on top of the clay
before placing the piece to be trimmed in the chuck. Other times on larger
pieces I have used a centered 5 gallon bucket with a circle of thin foam
rubber on top of the bucket rim.
