Glaze test for:  Colorants; Tony Hansen 20 x 5

The purpose for these tests below is to further work with limited
bases, such as a gloss, a matt and a decorative structured surface, and
develop a working range of added colorants for each base.

All tests fired on white, mid-range stoneware.

Fired in to cone 6 (1220c) in oxidation.

Firing ramp:

100c (212f) per hour to 600c (1112f)

150c (302f) per hour to 1100c (2012f)

100c per hour to 1220c (2228f)

15 - 30 minute soak depending on matts and glosses used.

Recipe:

20 3134

20 EPK

20 Silica

20 Custer Spar

20 Wollastonite

Note:

All raw materials measured up or down to nearest whole decimal.

Oxides used on percent basis to a 100 gram batch of glaze.

Substitutions:

Local Frit for 3134

Resulted in:

4 Rutile

5 Copper Carb.

(colorants from Karen's Starshine Aqua)

Fluid but not runny, cream colored base with streaking of orange and
greenish hues.  Could be a good over glaze.

Gloss surface.  Pooled cream and went transparent over high parts of
texture. Orange speckling is interesting.

2 Cobalt Oxide

4 Copper Carb.

4 Manganese Diox.

(colorants from M.B. Metallic Black)

Metallic black surface, but not as dense as original glaze.  No
movement.  A good black.

3 Cobalt Carb.

1 Zircopax

2 Rutile

Very glossy cobalt blue, runny.  Nix, 86ed it.  no
good.

3 Copper Carb.

Light green, glassy, gloss.  Moved, but did not run.  Looks
like it could.  Bottle glass green.

5 Copper Carb.

4 Rutile

Streaky, fluid. slightly runny gloss, with green and brownish
streaks.  Some cream mottling in overall background color.
Crazed where very, very thick.

2 RIO

3 Rutile

(from Chris Wolff's Cream Gloss)

Semi matt surface, with brown ground.  Thickest areas creamy and
also greenish brown.  A nice surface. with movement, but stayed
where put.

6 Zinc Oxide

3 Copper Carb.

(from Shiny Soft Green with Pink Specs.)

The best for last.

A semi matt hard surface with an overall greyish black ground.
Green streaking and pooling.   The edges of the

streaking are fuzzy and undefined.  Has a slightly metallic
look.  A patina like glaze that is not dry like Pete Pinnels great
bronze glaze, but instead has a smooth, waxy feel.
