Craig, interesting for you to bring up the idea of Clayart Plates for FDNY.
The other day while watching Today show and Rosie O'Donnell, Larry King
Live, etc. I am noticing everyone sitting there with mundane mass produced
mugs of some kind of beverages in front of them. I was wondering if all
these TV shows used beautiful clay artist mugs if the public would notice
and demand for art pottery would rise. Mugs I make are not very pretty
(being more of a tile artist), but you all make fantastic ones.
Always thinking of a marketing angle.

Wondering whether, we as a group, might consider making and giving to the
various FDNY stations, pottery plates.

Firemen share meals each day they are on duty.

Seems like a plate could be made for each fallen *brother and presented to
his specific station house. Perhaps an actual name stamped into the (wide)
rim of the plate, along with FDNY and 9-11-01..

*(Were there any women firefighters lost?)

Not something to hang on the wall, but to eat from, on a daily basis.

Hell, if everyone on list made just a single plate, we could likely have the
entire FDNY eating their meals on Clayart plates...Actually, the more I
think about it, maybe dinnerware for the troops and commerative plates for
the fallen that (would) hang on the wall..

This is not presented as an alternative to Lowell's great suggestion btw....

Thoughts?

Craig

As a retired firefighter (20 years as a volunteer), I would suggest a set of
dinnerware for everyday use, and a matching commerative plate for the fallen
firefighter. I doubt anyone would choose to eat from something that would
be a reminder of a fallen commerade.

Alan

P.S. FYI "fireman" is out; "firefighter" is appropriate (not because of
some politically correct movement, but because anyone who does the job is
worthy of the title.)

Joanne, I had thought of the mugs, also. It is bothersome to look at the
plain mass produced, but decided that the commentators would probably be
afraid to drink from a mug presented by someone they did not personally know.
Now with the anthrax scare, I would think they would be even more hesitant.
It is a good idea if someone on Clayart can think of a safe way to make this
happen and it would certainly raise the publics' awareness of handmade
dinnerware. Dorothy

Since the firemen/women also eat chili and soup, I'd volunteer to make some
bowls. I think it is a great idea.

I was home, sick, one day and surfing the TV channels
when I ran across a talk-type TV show. The hosts were
cooing over their new coffee table sent a viewer -
the artist who made it. They then broadcast a visit
to the furniture-artist's studio. Talk about exposure!

Craig...
There's something I would be glad to participate in. (Darn, a preposition
at the end of sentence).

Just give me an address of an FDNY firehouse and I'm off and running..
