The following is the article in our local paper. The loss of the 79 year old
church is a local loss but the building contained many of Norm's finest large
slab sculptures as well a 50 year collection of works by past students and
works by many of the biggies in the world of ceramics. Of course most of the
work shattered when the water was used to douse the completely destroyed
building. To contact Norm and Gloria you can e-mail them at

<in connection with the second degree arson of an artist studio on River Road.
Michael Todd Sides, 19, of 200 W. Burnsville Church Rd, was charged with one
count of felony burning an unoccupied building and one count of felony
breaking and entering. The Mitchell County Sheriff's Dept. and the Spruce
Pine Police are working together on the case. The charges stemmed from a
fire that burned on the old Penland church which had been renovated and was
currently being used as a studio by local artist Norman Schulman. The
building and all of the contents were totally destroyed, said Chief Deputy
Donald Street.

Also, according to Streets, Schulman had been out of town accepting an award
for his art work, so law enforcement officials are unaware just how costly
the damage actually was.

Street, along with Mitchell County Sheriff Ken Fox, questioned the suspects
and took statements from them regarding the events. According to Street
their stories conflicted.

Street and Deputy Richard Hoilman were investigating a non-related vandalism
in the area when they saw a white Ford Mustang with four people approach the
crime scene. The old saying of the criminal returning to the scene of the
crime came true this time, explained Street.

It became obvious that the individuals had been drinking and we issued
citations for drinking. Upon questioning as to where they had been, we found
that their stories were conflicting, said Street.

The Yancey County Sheriff's Dept. contacted their counterparts in Mitchell
Co. and informed them that they wanted to question the suspects in regard to
another incident. Upon questioning them, Yancey deputies confirmed that the
suspect's stories did not concur.

According to Street, the motive for the crime was volunteered by the
suspects. They said they thought this was Satanic church and that was why
they burned it, said Street.>>

Personally I am saddened for them both but they are doing well and thank all
who have called or visited. Norm went back to finishing his small anagoma
kiln 2 days after arriving home. More power to you Norm and Gloria is still
as sweet as ever Love em Tracy

i read this post with great sadness.
few months ago i visited that church with several others from the anagama
workshop of chuck hindes. norm schulman was very generous showing us around
and sharing. we saw all those pots, it`s unbelievable that they are
totally destroyed now! besides schulman`s own, there were early work from
SHANER, CUSHING, SOLDNER, VOULKOS...etc... one could see and handle them,
the "history of ceramics"...
if we can help in any ways, please let us know.
