for all you shino gurus. does anyone have a good recipe for Carbon trap
shino that works well over slips? I am doing a reduction firing with both
b-mix and dark red clay next week and would love to try some good shino
recipes. I have slip decorated many of these pieces already. Any advice
would be great. I enjoy the carbon trapping and the crawling. Also
interested in the effects of wax on top on the shino. Anyone out there have
good experience with this? Thanks

Try the Davis shino (look for mels article in CM must reads--you can find it
online) over your slip. Works great. Needs early reduction.

Hi Lindsay,
The recipe that I use over a white clay body, (porcelain), is a one
of Malcolm Davis's that I changed a bit.
C/10R
Nep.Sye 38.6
Soda Ash 16.3
EPK 8.5
OM4 13.0
Soda Spar 9.3
Calcined Alumina, mesh 200 or higher 8.5

I replaced half the EPK (originally 17.0), with the alumina. This
was to increase a depth of colour, which it really didn't seem to,
but it did make it a "fatter" glaze. I get good carbon trapping on
porcelain, and light coloured stoneware. Iron rich slips will show
up very nicely.
On a deep red clay body, this glaze goes from a deep purple brown to gold.

Another good recipe is Penn.State Shino

Nep.sye 14.6
Soda Ash 7.8
EPK 9.7
OM4 4.9
Soda Spar 34.0
Spodumene 29.0

This one does not trap carbon as well, but would work with slips too.

If you use a fine brush to paint a water based wax, soon after
glazing, you will get an orange line and if you are lucky carbon
trapping around that line. This doesn't really work with the iron
rich clay body. Just a tiny bit of iron in the clay body will
dramatically affect the colour of the glaze, that is much much more
depth of darkness.

There is a lot of information in the archives about shino, and more
recipes as well. You might refer to a series of aricles about shino
by Pete Pinnell in Clay Times last year.

Meticky Liz, where the sun is shining, and there is a wealth of shino
colours outside.

Hi Lindsay

I've used the Malcolm Davis recipe with really good results. Pete
Pinnell wrote a 4-part article for Clay Times which gave some great
ideas for working with shinos. I've tried some of his suggestions and
use plastic (from dry cleaner bags) over parts of pots to slow down the
drying, use wax resist, and a fan for creating air currents over the
pots. And, I let the glazed pots dry for a couple of days before firing.
Start reduction between cone 012 and cone 010. It's a great glaze to
"play" with.

Malcolm's Shino

Neph Sy 40.9
Soda Ash 17.3
OM-4 Ball Clay 13.8
Kona F-4 Feldspar 9.8
EPK 18.2

Add: Redart Clay 6.0

(Just turned off the kiln about and hour ago - can't wait to unload and
see how all those shinos turned out.)

Hi Lindsay: I use a shino with wax resists designs over the shino. It isn't a
great carbon trap shino but the results I get are unusual. I use an iron and
rutile glaze on top of the wax and shino and get a beautiful blue with rust
outlines next to the shino glaze. Wherever you paint the wax you will not get
carbon trapping -could make an interesting design by itself. Hope this helps. Susan
