I picked up this quotation at the heading of a posting which came in via =
Ababi <<>>

Having always considered Raku ware to be rather dense, opaque stuff does =
this mean we can now enjoy the beauty of translucent Raku ? If it does I =
might take up the challenge. What sort of top fiing temperatures would =
be required ?

Hello Ivor
I knew I had to write it: "yet it cannot be real porcelain as real P.
we fire to 1330C".
But I did not write it. Now, in the last firing, Wednesday, I had some
pieces left from my last firing when I was "smoked", as well as new
ones What a different, like between a tractor and a Porsche. Raku for
me is the intellectual challenge as well as the virtuosity challenge of
the clay work. Some of the pieces I dump because I do not like the
results and heaviness, even if they are in one piece!
Back to my story.
These old works were over dense and over heavy. My Raku claybody,
Dutch K- 129 an excellent claybody, with 40% grog yet plastic.
The problem is with me. I do not have patient to burnish so I need a
delicate claybody.
This claybody I have made has 60 clay + 12 Alumina as filler +
molochite as fine white grog (talc of course) smooth to touch, flows in
the extruder.
Some of the glazes I tested looked different on K 129 than on VC
claybody. I mean to test again some of the glazes that almost succeeded
on K129, hopefully they will be better on VC's raku "p"
By the way, I looked for a new glaze before I started with the
'Porcelain, as I did not like the way glaze looked on K-129.
..I know, about glazing I am like the PRINCESS AND THE PEA.

Dear Ababi,

I understand you to mean that you are not firing to full vitrification =
but only to a low bisque to get cohesion through sintering before you =
apply your raku glazes. Your intention is to have a very white clay to =
give strong contrast for your darker coloured glazes and carbon =
markings.

Best regards,=20

Ivor.

Dear Ivor.
Yes but more than that white, smooth pleasant.
Val Cushing's Handbook page 42 column 5"Cushing PORCELAIN RAKU
for throwing&large pieces".
I do not need to use names, for being an important person. It was Val
Cushing who wrote PORCELAIN I only copied. This claybody has
porcelaneous characters.
If you would see my studio, you would not look at me again, yet this
porcelain business force me, to work clean (sometimes)

It looks to me now that the reason that I had gray glazes was, probably
as you meant for unripe porcelain body, that the claybody, was gray, I
saw it when I broke test tiles for better scanning. David Jones in his
book offers to make
a slip of 85 kaolin 15 Silica and to ultrox. I painted my test tiles,
this time was an up side down dish more like helmet, with this slip, My
white English kaolin was perfect and on the greenware it looks better.
OK!
I hope I answered you.
Defiantly I see the different between ^04 porcelain and ^10 porcelain!
