The water gas reaction is endothermic. Forcing superheated steam onto =
white hot coke cools the coke down, so air has to be blown onto it to =
re-heat it. This is an exothermic reaction which creates Hydrogen and =
Carbon monoxide. Industrially the two reactions are combined to give a =
diluted fuel called semi water gas. This is why some people who use oil =
or wood as fuel notice a boost to their firings on wet days . See a =
chemistry book for the heat exchange equations.
Water is used to extinguish fires. Two processes involved. One, heat =
evaporates water and so heat is removed from the fire. Two, Steam =
created in One acts as a blanket to exclude air and so prevent =
continuing combustion.
