Anyone have any thoughts about this oil in the throwing water? I am very
curious about this.
Many thanks,
Carol

It can't be much trouble to try it - let us know what you think,
and whether the experience was positive or not.

Wouldn't be a good idea if you want to add slips before firing.

Well, I tried the vegetable oil in the throwing water and I can't say that
it made much difference to the throwing; the slippery feeling seemed the
same with oil or without, but it wasn't exactly a scientific test. The
difference was in the smell (I used the oil off a store-bought bottle of
Italian dressing!) and the cleanup - oily tools and bat. Rinsing is one
thing, cleaning with dish soap is quite another. I suppose one could live
with the vague oil haze but if one has ants...well, it would not be so
great. So I think that unless someone comes up with a really good reason to
use oil in the throwing water, I'll pass.

As I was in an experimenting mood (I had a half hour to kill at the Art
Centre) I tried Anji's method of throwing dry that she described on Friday.
The 'feel' of it is very different and needs practice but it will be worth
pursuing the skill. What joy throw a bottle without it threatening to
collapse. And trimming the base in situ, wiring it off and NOT feeling with
a sinking heart that the base is too heavy.

Learning from mistakes is fine but isn't success enjoyable?
Best regards,
Carol

I have not been following this thread, but wonder why
introduce vegetable or other oil into a clay
environment? After all, a little oil or fat goes an
awfully long way... Once in circulation, it would make
glazing, etc. very difficult.

After reading your recipe, why not just use runny
mayonnaise, Ivor?

To get vegetable oil and water to mix into an emulsion,
put a good pinch of bicarb of soda in the water and
shake or whisk the mixture briskly.

Hi,
The best way to throw "almoust dry" is to add one spoon of
washing-up liquid, like Yes, in the water, great and keep you fingers =
clean.
(For Haloween, take 3 spoons and add some red candy-colour..)
All the best
