Dear Carol,
Since oil and water are immiscible the only suggestion I can make is =
that if mosquito start to breed in the residual slip they will die from =
a lack of oxygen since they will encounter a layer of oil when they =
break the surface of the water to breath.
To get vegetable oil and water to mix into an emulsion, put a good pinch =
of bicarb of soda in the water and shake or whisk the mixture briskly.=20
I would imagine any residual film of oil on clay would be an impediment =
to making secure attachments when luting handles or knobs.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.

Dear Janet,
Not my original idea to add oil to throwing water, though the thought of =
replacing slip with English Salad Cream may have advantages for some =
when they get hungry.
As I have said and written, throwing dry has many advantages provided =
you are not in favour of heavily grogged clays. And anyway, these =
misbehave if they get over wet. They are best thrown dry anyway because =
the grog accelerates the adsorption of water. Use thick leather pads or =
slate ribs to prevent finger wear, otherwise you get brown rings as =
underglaze decoration.
Best regards,
Ivor.
