Dear Melanie,
Try craft books designed to teach the use of
polymer clay. There's lots available--I've seen
them advertised. Do a search at
http://www.amazon.com . I'm sure you'll find
something good. One thing I really like about
Amazon is that many of their books come with
customer reviews attached. Makes it a lot easier
to guess whether you're getting a good one.
Best wishes,
Cindy Strnad

I'm trying to teach myself how to make little clay figures, but for some
reason, I can't seem to grasp the idea. Does anyone know of any books that
teach this process? I don't want them to be perfect, but for people to get
the general idea that they are supposed to be people.
I hope this made sense.
Thank you!
Melanie

I've seen quite a few books on creating figures with polymer clay. The
polymer clay books are shelved right next to the pottery craft books at my
local barnes and noble. You may be able to apply some of the same modeling
techniques to traditional clay.

there is a great book, published by Lark Books, the title is
Making Ceramic Sculptuer. There is a great collection of images as well as
step by step projects, and if I am remembering correctly at least 2 of them
deal with figures.

A rather good book is - Ceramic Sculpture - Methods and processes.
By John B. Kenny. 1953. Chilton Books.
ISBN 0-8019-0162-6 Hardcover. 0-8019-0162-5 Paperback.
Your local library may be able to order the book in for you. I think the
book covers everything you would need to know, from serious sculpture to
fun things and kids' stuff. With supports, armatures, kiln firing, and so
on. I hope you can find the book. Have fun. Graeme.
