Dear Randy Peckham,

You have just given yourself a fine excuse to learn the gentle Art of =
Calligraphy. Learn the basics using Italic Script. My suggestion would =
be to get something like "Calligraphy Made Easy" by Will Norman, ISBN =
0-88176-093-5. Publications International; and a Platignum Calligraphy =
Pen Set. Learn how to form the letters and ligature them in ink first, =
and how to do the layout. Then, when you feel competent, get some river =
reeds and cut these into chisel edged scripting tools to suit your own =
style of penmanship. Draw the edge towards you as you trace the ductus =
of each letter. This scrapes out a divot of clay and prevents you from =
digging the edge into the thickness. They are the best tool I know for =
incising your "monica" into the base of a pot. Learn "how" on leather =
hard tiles and as you improve, scribe a rondel within the footring of =
your bowls and incise your name in the central space. When the clay is =
green hard, a light scrape with a flat blade will clear the fasch from =
the edges of your letters. The little volume by Speedball will extend =
your repetoir if you should wish to try other scripts.

It is my opinion that this is a much neglected way of decorating pots. =
Used on plate rims it makes an excellent way of giving life an variation =
to a good Celadon or transparent coloured glaze.

Hope you have a lot of fun and master the Art.
