Splendid David - those $ signs went straight through the junk filter into
the deleted folder... shame - I quite enjoy reading what you write - just
make sure your titles don't deprive me of that over my morning coffee.....

I envy you your woods... - no pun intended.....

we have an interesting community in the Purbecks - a splendid bit of the
Dorset coast which has been isolated until the last century - big folds in
the planet around here - always full of geology students and field trips.
one fold was impassable except in one place - where there was/is a
castle... So there has always been a sense of isolation. Isle of Purbeck
it is called, although it is very much part of the mainland. anyway, there
is a thriving, if underground barter system in place, and not just amongst
the artists.....

Dear Arti, it's not about the money.
Our consumerist advertising-laden society tries its to equate
money with self-worth and happiness.
As long as you buy into the lie, you will be bitter and frustrated.
American males have a particularly hard time breaking free from
basing their success and self-worth on how much money they
have.

I'll take my life any day over the fresh-from-the-golf-course doctor
who makes more money in a few weeks than I make all year.
I eat better than him, since I have time to grow and cook good
food. I have more freedom than him, because my time is not
booked to the minute for the next 6 months.
I can spend more time with my family since I'm home all day, or
I can take a day off to go on field trips with my kids.
I sleep better than him because I have no worries about dealing
with employees or hospital administrators, or the plummeting
value of my retirement account.

To me, it's a pretty sad life if it is measured by time spent hitting
a golf ball and playing blackjack.
Even sadder if the only reason for the work you do is to get
the money to spend it on such meaningless pursuits.
Call me a 'professional' if you like, don't if you don't want to.
I don't care, but 'professional' does not equal 'big money'.
You become what you think about. If you think about money,
that is your profession: making and spending money.

A great book, if you want to read more about money in
'the big picture', is
'The Seven Laws of Money' by Michael Phillips.
Some of the laws:
Do it and the money will come.
Money is a dream: A fantasy as alluring as the Pied Piper.
Money is a nightmare.
You can never really give money away or receive money
as a gift.
There are worlds without money.

One of the great thing about living out in the woods is that
money is not important on a daily basis. I go days and days
without touching any. In the city, everything has a price
and you are making transactions all day.

Seems that all of you guys work like sled dogs to make a dime....I know
I don't even try as the effort usually far outweighs the gain(Remember the
old guy in a wheelchair at the sale?)...and I can be insulted right here at
home....If you compared the life of the ceramist to the life of the
part-time stock dealer, the dealer gets more buck to his bang.....The doctor
fresh from the golf course gets more moola for his ministration.....right on
down to the ditch digger whom the boss sometimes buys a keg at the end of a
hard ass week....Do we as potters rate right below the guy(my
brother-in-law) that drives the manure truck(free fertilizer!) at the dairy
farm????.....
All those definitions of professionalism I've seen laid out around here
I'm sure were qualities the authors possessed...All the teachers say, "I'm a
pro cuz I teach".....The production guys, "I'm a pro cuz I produce".....
Well, Where is the money?....All the pros who are not potters make big
bucks...I know a part-time brokerHEHEHE that makes mo money most days in a
few minutes effort than most of us mud dwellers make in a year whilst going
24/7....It don't seem right to me....Didn't Jesus chase the money lenders
out of the temple?...So how come they get the wheat...we get the
shaft.......In my experience the farther you can get your hands from the
non-abstract material the mo money you get .....If you can do your work with
a pointer, on a video, at a conference, then you get to roll in the
dough....hang out at Caesar's Palace....play blackjack and make mo
money....We changes of state of materials get dirty, sweaty, and cook terds
and no money....How ya gonna play blackjack with no money?....mo money....no
money...Them: mo money, us: no money...Get it?
I'm not sure I'm all that OK with this state of affairs!....If anyone
says, "I do it cuz I love the work" I'll slap the terd out of em....
What I wanna know is.....WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Where do I send my money for this worthy cause of turning the world
upside down and giving the money to those who do the work?
