just my opinion.
(never humble)
itc is a kiln wash.
do not put anything on top of it.
you can, but what is the purpose?
we use it on our salt shelves.
the salt just comes right off.
it is the best kiln wash i have ever used.
(i know, i know. but i have used a great
deal of crap in my life...and this is the best.)
look in nils lou's book....he put kiln a shelf
in his wood fired kiln on stilts with a 25lb bag of clay
on it. it bent into a nice U shape.
next time he fired with the same set up/only
itc'd the shelf. no bend. he has fired several times
since. still no bend.
i am going to stick my head in his kiln next week...loook
at that shelf..and see if he is fibbing.
( i was the first one to make the small 35 square inch
flue....but, he published first.
i have mine dated...1960. )
he had better be good to us when we get to oregon....damn.
well, if not...we will stay with craig, or don...or drive
to eugene. dannon has warned me....he will try and make
us stay in the shack that he uses for `firing` students.
sharlene will hate that. no biffy.
anyway.
use itc.
expensive? not if it saves your shelves, your kiln, your coils.
what is that worth?
no one ever answers that question. they just belly ache about the
price. false economy. see it all the time. save 10 cents to
lose 100 bucks.

We fire to cone 10-11 with ash glazes. Occasionally, the ash gets away and
runs off the pot onto the shelf and EATs into the shelf, causing us to say
many bad words. Does the ITC prevent the glaze from eating into the shelf??
So far, no kiln wash we have ever used has prevented this.
Thanks

Does anyone know if it is possible to put a layer of ordinary kiln wash over
top of a coat of ITC on kiln shelves? This is because i have heard of some
drawbacks of using ITC alone as a kiln wash due to its rough surface and
also having to add patch up spots whenever a glaze drips off, and that could
get very expensive. Mainly, I want to use ITC to keep the 12-by-24 inch kiln
shelves from warping. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks,
Paul

I used itc on my shelves as well as the interior of my kiln. When I
realized how
much itc it was going to take to do an adequate job on the shelves, I bailed
out
and sprayed kiln wash over them. The wash seems to be staying on very
nicely after
5 firings

This is the first time I have felt like responding. But for this one I
have one word. RUN. Get as far away from ITC on your kiln shelves as you
can. Been there, done that, waisted money.

Thanks for the opinion.
You don't say why you have it.
In my experience using ITC on shelves in both
electric and gas reduction firing, I can say, I'm
extremely happy with it, for having completely protected
the shelves from glaze drips, warping, vapor rings from shino
and volatile glazes, porcelain bodies adhering to the shelf,
and...having to be replaced.
Perhaps your experience has been different?

David,
What happened that you feel so strongly about ITC on kiln shelves?
Just curious,
