Hands-on Plus with Phil Rogers
British Potter Phil Rogers will start off this five day workshop =
with a lecture and slide show in which he will look at some of the =
influences on his work and take a look at his own work in depth. This =
talk will provide the opportunity to discuss glazes and firing =
techniques. During the five days,he will demonstrate the throwing of =
pieces he makes in Wales on a regular basis. Participants will have the =
opportunity to throw a range of forms, choosing from =
bottles,pitchers,Yunomi,bowls,large plates and more. Trimming,fitting =
lids and application of handles will also be covered. Phil will share =
his decoration techniques and ash glaze recipes. Running concurrently =
with the throwing aspect of the five days,Phil will provide information =
on the basics of understanding glazes from the "local materials" =
angle, covering simple chemistry and clearing away some of the mystique =
of glazes. Test tiles will be provided for students wishing to test =
their own "local materials" formulas. During this action packed =
workshop, there will be a second slide talk on the history of Studio =
Pottery in Britain from 1922 onward to the present day from the =
perspective of Phil Roger's own extensive collection. A consultant to =
one of the biggest auction houses in London, Phil is widely recognized =
as an expert on British Pottery. A local materials list will be mailed =
to students prior to the class, for those students wishing to pursue that =
angle. Pots made during the class with Wes. Potters clay may be fired =
