This seems appalling. Do the folks at NCECA know about this. I know that
the hotels are reluctant to set aside larger blocks of rooms, but $120 is
pretty high. That is the highest "special" rate ever for the NCECA
conference hotels as far as I know. Why is Kansas City so expensive? I
have a reservation in the Hyatt, but I am dismayed to find out that so many
people will be scrambling for rooms.

Is there any chance that more rooms will be allocated at the conference
rate? ...or any other hotels within a block or so? Both Hyatt and Westin
are full at those rates as of 11/05.

You know Gayle, I was noticing on the maps that there's a big park located
by NCECA in Kansas City! I was joking about camping after hearing about
the sell outs of the conference reserves.

My mantra of finally going to NCECA is actually working... I just bought
my plane ticket. I can't believe that with four months to go, this is
where I am. :)

If NCECA ever does come to Seattle...
camping on the islands and Ferrying over would be fun

Good Luck everyone

One would think with the state of the economy and how hard the hotel
industry has been hit recently that they would be falling all over
themselves to woo convention goers with great deals.
One way to get around it is to have local potters offer spare rooms to
convention goers.

If NCECA ever comes to Seattle that is exactly what I will do!
Or you can bring your tents and set up a Potters tent city!:-> Don't I

No kidding that's appalling, Vince. Especially since the poster and
registration materials have not been mailed out yet. Which means that most
members of NCECA don't even know yet what the conference hotels are much
less the prices or phone numbers.

I too was shocked to hear that the conference hotels were already
booked. On the other hand, last year in Charlotte, they kept opening up
new blocks of rooms at the conference rate, and getting conference rate
rooms in additional hotels, at least up into January or February, so maybe
that will happen again.

this will be my 4th NCECA, G-d willing, and the creek don't rise, the first time I
went I was told that every one starts makeing reservations in Nov. And each year it
seems to creep further into the future. one thing that I have seen happen is that
people seem to reserve several rooms and as the date gets closer and friends who
have said that they will go, change their minds and they cancel a reservation. so
you can leave your name on a wait list sometimes. Last year they added another
hotel or was it two to the list in Jan. the campout would sound better if I were
either younger or had one of those motel rooms on wheels that you tow.

Millie in Md. hoping that the airline that I make reservations with will still be
in business in March,

Yes, it will. Louis Katz explained it to me. When a block of rooms is set
aside for conference attendees, NCECA is committing to those rooms. If the
rooms do not fill to a certain percentage, NCECA has to pay a portion of the
room rate, and that can get real expensive very quickly. So they set aside
blocks of rooms a little at a time. They are being especially cautious this
year, because of the national reticence about travel. I think that we might
all surprise ourselves. Recent events might make us turn out for NCECA in
even greater numbers.

So keep trying those reservations. They will open up more rooms at the
conference rate. I am surprised by the conference room rate, however,
considering that the hotel industry nationwide is really suffering, and as
someone already pointed out, you would think they would readily go to
greater lengths to attract visitors. Especially in a place like Kansas
City, which ain't exactly a tourist mecca.

This is Friday evening at 7:00PM PST and the Westin computer (their
scheduling desk) will not let me get the Conference rate. The person
there suspected that the block of rooms was full.

I searched on orbitz.com for hotels in Kansas City near Crown Center and found the Fairfield Inn Union Hill, 3001 Main Street. It is 0.7 miles from Crown Center (I figure a 15 minute walk) and has rooms for $79 - $99 per night. The Fairfield is part of the Marriott chain, and usually comfortable and clean. Continental breakfast is included. There is an $89 AARP rate, too!

I will be looking for other people with clay on their shoes to walk to Crown Center with.
