Kelly... Yes..there is a much easier way.
Dry out the rough dug clay and remove any obvious roots etc.
Bludge it in a large quantity of water using an electric drill with a =
propeller or similar. Sieve out the worst of the foreign matter with a =
coarse sieve then put it through a sieve as fine as you use for your =
glazes...use plenty of water.
Leave it to settle and discard the water off the top..this will remove =
unwanted soluble matter.
Dry out on plaster or similar after stirring when you have removed most =
of the water and let it dry out completely.
Break up into smallish lumps and store for use.
These lumps should break up on soaking so mix and sieve the glaze =
normally.
We have an 'earthenware'clay here which will fire at cone 9 as a glaze =
...a sort of rust/tenmoku..with no additions !!
