Hi Kelly,

Here is my method for working with local earthenware clay....

First break it into chunks somewhere between the size of a golfball and a
baseball.

Let them totally dry out. Set them under your kiln while it is firing if
you need to speed things up.

When the chunks are totally dry, add them to a bucket of hot water.

Soak them overnight.

Mix this up with a jiffy mixer if you have one or by hand. Pour it through
a household strainer. I have one that sits on the edge of a five gallon
bucket. You can also run it through some finer sieves if you want to.

Pour the clay slip onto plaster bats or concrete to let it dry out again.

Once it is dried out, you can weigh and add these chunks to any glaze you
are making.
