Here's how I ended up able to use chainsaws and power tools, frame and drywall, roof and refinish, fish, butcher and dress (and cook and serve)chickens, field dress and skin large game, use firearms, track and hunt, work with ornery horses, stitch up injured animals, etc.... there's a simple answer:

My parents wanted me to be a girly girl. Mom put me in ballet (I flunked out by first grade.) They bought me barbies with wedding dresses and accessories. (I buried them.) Dad's biggest hope for me was that I would be charming, go to Vassar (for an "M.R.S. degree"), marry a Kennedy or at least a millionaire, and maybe win the miss america contest on the side. Sorry dad, on all counts.

Meanwhile my brother had no interest in their visions for him, (football, hunting, etc.) He's a musician.

There is an old saying that goes, "If you want to make god laugh, tell him about your plans". I'd say the same goes for your kids.

Yours, Kelly in Ohio (Wondering about my own kids... raised by parents who value voluntary simplicity, social justice, environmental activism... they'll probably end up being CEOs for big oil, or (shudder) nestle, or disney..., and wallow in conspicuous consumption. sigh.)
