approaching galleries for exhibition opportunity

Presuming they are telling you the truth and not just
fobbing you off in a friendly and polite manner, how
far ahead are you asking galleries to accommodate your
work and how large would your proposed exhibition be?

If you are planning on dates in 2002 through 2003, that
could be the reason they have no space available. The
larger and more prestigious the gallery, the longer in
advance they plan their exhibition programme.
Exhibition schedules are made anything up to 5 or 6
years in advance. (Yet we wonder why work on exhibition
is sometimes stale or passé? Or quite different to the
posters and publicity material).

If your proposed exhibition is going to be enough for a
one-man/woman show, they may be more cautious if it is
your first major exhibition. It may be worth looking at
what their programme has been recently, what they are
currently showing and if at all possible, what they
have planned during the next year. May give you more of
an insight into their choices and policies.

Smaller places may be slightly better at accommodating
an exhibition in the short term, but not necessarily.

Have you given them just the one proposal, or are you
versatile? You may find making Plan A, Plan B and Plan
C proposals will awaken more interest when making your
initial approach. Try to go to the top right at the
beginning. Talking to the right person at the right
time is part of boosting your success rates.

Have a good time in Guatemala!
