companies..why do they have email addresses?

Interesting conversation with my local IT advisers
today. Included talk on the answering of e-mail (or
not) by companies, associations, individuals and anyone
with a net presence. Apparently many (here in the UK)
are still only checking their mail once or twice a
week.

Sometimes it is because the boss does not want his
employees "wasting time" (as Steve says, we pay
telephone costs for each minute on-line), so he does
not allow them to use the e-mail and/or internet. In
some firms, it is even considered to be a workplace
abuse akin to talking to your lover for hours...

To save that happening, these bosses then hog the
action themselves and then sit on mail until they
remember/have time to reply. This seems weird to me,
because it is like not allowing employees to answer the
phone! It must also increase his/her workload
considerably... The boss does not always know what is
in stock, when the next delivery is due, etc. etc. and
has to go and find out...

BTW they also told me how companies who, albeit
unwittingly pass on viruses, worms, etc., are loosing
many customers and would-be customers. So if you keep a
customer data-base or e-addresses on a PC which does
not have updated anti-virus protection, watch out. You
too may loose customers!

Janet Kaiser - Wondering if Steve is going to invite me
to meet him at the British Museum, so we can talk about
knickers whilst checking out the Agatha Christie
exhibition...
