I have been once firing all my work in a soda kiln for more than 10 =
years, and bloating is not a problem.=20
But I do fire slowly, which is a more efficient way of firing a dense =
brick kiln, and I'm careful to oxidise up to bisque-stage temperature. =
It's common for people to bisque fire in an electric kiln......when =
once-firing in a fuel burning kiln you need to bear in mind the need to =
control atmosphere. Hope this helps to solve your problem.

In her book on Single Firing, Fran Tristram discusses "dunting" which I am
wondering is not the same thing we are talking about as "bloating". On pages
34 and 35 she talks about this happening early in the firing...sometimes
cured by slowing down at points of crystabolite and quartz inversion. If
not, she has suggestions for improving the clay body. Once firing is just a
vitrification firing tagged onto a biscuit firing in my mind. I fire
pre-biscuit pots faster than single fire ones at the early end. Anyway, I
think the information in this book is good for problem solving.

Mary Beth -
These two terms mean very different things. Bloating is when trapped
volatiles expand after the clay becomes thermoplastic, creating the
characteristic bulges in the wares. Dunting is cracking, breaking, or
shattering caused by excessively fast cooling, by excessive glaze
compression, or both. When there is moderately excessive glaze compression
we sometimes get "shivering," when small razor-sharp slivers of glaze pop
off the high spots and outer corners. Dunting and shivering are the
potter's worst nightmares. When either occurs the wares must of course be
destroyed.
