i have to respond. just gotta.

i see no reason why we should discourage people from asking questions like
this on clayart. in the old days there were apprenticships and masters.
those of us alone in our studios can't possibly try everything and
experiment with every phase of everything. if someone can help along the way
to shorten up the process i say go for it. it's not as if we are not going
to have a few thousand other things we will learn about by trial and error.
getting help from experts just helps us down the road a ways saving time and
resources for even further exploration and discoveries. learning from
others trial and error is not dishororable. in my book it is smart. before
i ask a question i always look through the archives and experiment some.
if i'm then stumped why not ask. for example: i know that if i play with my
favorite floating blue recipe for a few more years i will get it to not run
off my pots. but geeze i can only put up with so many failures and so many
wasted firings having tried all the possible things i can think of to fix
it. why not ask for help and take advantage of the collective wisdom of the
ages. then maybe i can get on with it and have time to try other things and
hopefully solve problems others may not have solved yet.

by the way, if anyone has suggestions for my floating blue problems please
help. i have varied the thickness of the glaze, add epsom salts to
floculate sinCe i have very soft water, tried several different cones for
both bisque and glaze firings. tried different recipes, held my tongue in
diferent positions, changed clay body, yadda yadda yadda. the only thing i
haven't done is to pretend i am so hip that i don't like blue glazes but
being cool has never been easy for me. i drive an inherited "my fathers
oldsmobile' for crying out loud.
