I authored an article for Studio Potter on this subject in the December 1983
Volume 12 #1 issue entitled "Retrofit-A Solution for the Stacked Brick
Door". Copies are still available from www.studiopotter.org so you can check
it out for yourself. It saved my back, my spirit, and many pots from
tumbling debris from stacking bricks for years.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me during business hours and I
would be happy to discuss with you.

Best

After 30 years of stacking door bricks at the worst possible time
(midnight), I am about to rebuild my kiln and put in a fiber door. Can
anyone suggest a good book on fiber door construction or offer some
suggestions: modules vs layered, thickness of door, pound density and
temperature rating of fiber, best resource, problems encountered, spray
coating necessity, lining door with radiant heat reflective material, etc.

Thanks,

Peter Jones

Jonathon: Thanks for the info. I'll get a copy of it from Gerry Williams,
an old friend of mine. SP got a bit too esoteric for my liking after awhile
and I stopped receiving it. Guess I missed out on some good information.

I looked through the archives and found little. Have also put in a call for
the Olson book on kilns. Better to research first before spending the
money. If need be, I'll drop you a line again with specific questions.

Hello Peter:

One book that has a lot of information on fiber and some door construction
is: The Energy Efficient Potter by Regis Brodie.

Peter, in response to a question I had on fiber doors someone else on
Clayart suggested I contact Thermal Ceramics. I did and was pleased to
receive their information that was extremely helpful. You can get a
catalogue at www.thermalceramics.com. Good luck.
