the aesthetics of pinholes

Dear Luis Fontanills,

An interesting philosophical question.

Firstly, Pinholes, like crazing are defects in a glaze which has been =
formulated or designed to be smooth and defect free. But pinholes, like =
crazing can be deliberately used as a decorative device. So a maker is =
free to choose.

However, pin holes are a sign that a glaze may not have completed its =
chemistry and in such cases some of the substances which it contains may =
still be in a condition where they would dissolve in fruit or other =
acids and contaminate beverages or foodstuffs.

One additional problem which may not have been considered is that =
pinholes could have sharp edges, or that small protruding bubbles could =
fracture and create sharp edges. Such a glaze would then be hazardous =
since someone might score or graze themselves on the offending razor.

I will be interested to read other responses to your proposal.

Best regards,
