Hi everyone:
I am still without kiln or wheel (the crate in which my Pacifica is being=20
shipped across the pond seems to have been greatly delayed), and feeling=20
very frustrated.
All you European potters in particular, do you know anything about=20
gasoil-fired kilns? I eventually found a Spanish website for kilns, both=20
electric and fuel-fired. The outfit is called Emison=20
and claims to have been in the business for 40=20
years. Their largest kiln for domestic use is cylindrical and measures=20
45cm wide by 65cm deep (roughly 6cu.ft. if I've done my math right). The=20
price is high compared to North American kilns, around $4000 Can. I cannot=
=20
install an electric kiln here because of cost per kw and lack of adequate=20
wiring in this old house. Propane would also involve complications re=20
installation permits. I intend to install both wheel and kiln in an open=20
patio at the back of the house. We only rent the bottom floor dwelling=20
which includes the patio and a small shed. Upstair neighbours are okay,=20
musicians from the local Conservatory. The kiln allegedly has a controller=
=20
and digital pyrometer (probably platinum-rhodium type) and will fire to=20
1400C=BA. It is lined with 'mineral and ceramic fibre' and the number of=20
burners is not specified. There is not even a picture of any of the kilns=
=20
except for one postage stamp size gif showing several different ones.
If I don't get my workshop set up soon, I feel I will go nuts.
