I don't mean to diminish the importance of life as a source of knowledge,
experience, or whathaveyou. What else is there but life, anyway? Those
people who have learned about art/craft/whatever from their travels,
reading, visiting museums are still drawing on the history and institutions
of art for their knowledge. I never meant to argue that all great artists
must come from a narrow range of instituions called academia. I'm saying
that artists must stand on the shoulders of those who have come before.
Some may learn from a university setting and some may learn from reading and
visiting museums; but all save a precious few must absorb and profit from
the knowledge of others before doing any mature art.
