Dear Paul,
Greenwood and Earnshaw inform me that J. A. Arfvedson, an assistant to =
the great J. J. Berzelius recognised this as a new Alkali Metal in 1817. =
He chose the name Lithium to contrast it with Sodium and Potassium which =
were obtained at that time from materials of organic origin. Sir Humphry =
Davy isolated the metal in 1818.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.
