updated fri 30 nov 01

russel,
dont you think that we should call it "peggy`s
spooze"?
since she invented it, and because she was a clayarter
too!
someone asked if the 1/3 clay should be dry or wet
clay? i dont think it really matters, i used thick
slurry and also dry clay. and i never been too strickt
with the measurements either :-))
i`d love to hear from kate if she fires the chiminea-
i fired pots in my barbeque, with and without sagger,
and especially for primitive pinchpots= it`s
perfect!!!
(if your neighbors are too "nosey" you can put a slice
of bacon on ...)

What would be a good substitute for corn syrup in Peggy's Spooze.
I don't seem to come across corn syrup over here, but there is plenty of
treacle.
Does that sound suitable?

my guess is, that if your treacle is very sticky it should work just fine.
the american corn syrup is extremly sticky, thick and gluey. (like old left
over honey in a bottle) btw: do you think honey would work???

I think I made it with very thick sugar solution. Yet I think I had a
terrible mistake. It attaches the parts wonderful but not a real
connection, still need a slip around I lost some works I liked so I
moved back to magic water and or magic slip, means your claybody +
defloculant like if you meant to make a slip cast. I do it 1 Kg dry
claybody + 1.5 gram sodium silicate+ 1.5 gram of soda ash,sometimes
more, hard to stop the Sodium silicate from flowing. + water as much as
need 0.4 Litter or more. I keep them in a closed jars for each
claybody I make. Or buy.

I mixed up spooze with honey because the syrup is not available here.
It worked fine. However, the drawback was an open studio in the summer and
the wasps really like that stuff. I use slip with paper fiber in it for
repairing now, instead.
I label it spooze anyway to help remind me of Peggy and some others.

Alisa,

The mice in my studio have discovered my spooze. I have four containers of
it, and all of them with little teeth marks around the lid!

By the way, I use fake maple syrup to mix mine up - it's usually much
cheaper than Karo Syrup.
