pinell green question

Hi all--
Can anyone out there tell me if Pete Pinell's Stronium Green Matt glaze is
foodsafe or not? And how and where does one go to figure this kinda stuff
out????

Hi Lyn,

First I will assume you are talking about Pete's Weathered Bronze Green. If
not, then ignore everything else I say. When fired to a full large cone
6--tip touching it has test to have pretty good leaching performance. I
would eat off it. But the question of "food safe" is not easily answered
unless you have lead and/or cadmium in your glazes. There are FDA standards
in the US and similar ones in most countries of the world covering those
materials. We're pretty much on our own when it comes to evaluating other
materials. I've collected quite a bit of what is known and put it up on my
frogpondpottery web site including the leach testing results for this glaze
and a perspective on how you might want to think about this subject.

Petes Weathered Bronze Green has some other deficiencies, though, that may
cause you to think twice before putting it on dinnerware. It pinholes for
some people. It is also reported to have a soft, scratchable surface by
some. Others have reported a tendency to metal mark. Overall it is a
beautiful and stable (to leaching) glaze, but may be best confined to the
outside of cups, bowls, etc.
