tony,

i have read fran tristam's book. you're right, best is to find someone to
show me what can't be shown in books, or figure it out myself. i don't know
of anyone in all of southern colorado who single-fires. thanks for your
offer of help, i may take you up. i haven't tried spraying glaze. i don't
have the facility nor room for it. i use prepared clay. porcelain i have
used lately is called DAVE'S, because it is cheaper than BABU, but i will
try babu next for its reputed translucency. have also used ZEN. i don't know
the formulas for any of these, i assume they do not circulate? can fiber be
wedged into clay, or must it be mixed in?

Have you picked up a copy of Fran Tristram's book yet? It will help you a
bit, but I think the direct method is best--find someone in your area and
ask to learn from them. If you would like some help, email or call me and I
will help you however I can. Try adding some fiber to your porcelain,
compress hard when you are throwing. Wait till the pots are bone dry or
nearly bone dry and glaze. If your pots are slumping, you may be putting too
much glaze on them, not glazing fast enough, and or your clay wall is too
thin. Have your tried spraying the glaze on? Also, what is your porcelain
recipe?

Brian,

Yes, you can wedge fiber into porcelain--make sure you break it up so you
don't get hair balls in your clay--real drag. I am more of a stoneware buy
recently moved into porcelain.

Try spraying when the pots are bone dry. Also try when they are leather
hard. Also try doing inside first. next day do outside (Ernest told me
that one). Depending on the form, thickness, how well you compressed, you
will have to try different techniques until you find what works for you.
Remember to allow yourself some patience.

I have a new friend who is more experienced in porcelain single firing then
I am--small and large forms, thin walled. He and I will hopefully be
getting together in the near future to download as much information into
each other's brain as we can handle.
Try contacting him:

Ernest Miller

There are also some 30+ years experienced single fire folk on this list who
may consider replying to you.
