Hi all interested in single-firing,
I heard the following and found it fascinating, and proof to me that I
need to do more testing! :-)
I was visiting over the weekend with an Idaho potter, Ken Coyne, and he
related that he regularly single-fires Laguna Clay's Cone 5 B-mix, which he
glazes at bone dry. Ken makes a lot of colanders, the process getting some
dust on the ware, so he plunge-dips the pieces into water first before
glazing to rinse off the dust.
Ken throws some pieces moderately thick, then trims them thin (1/8-inch
to 3/16-inch I guess).
Ken is using cone 5 oxidation glazes.
I saw virtually no handles or other attachments on his ware. Ken said
he has gotten excessive cracking in some pieces which had a lot of clay
carved out.
Here is one potter who has discovered what works very well for him. I
report it in hopes it stimulates someone else's (besides mine!) thinking
about this energy-saving process.
Good potting,
