Dear USA-clayarters,

I refer to one "Luster Raku" recipe, sent by Ababi. Copy below. =20
Never heard of "Ultrox" in Europe.
Is this a mineral, or a frit ?
Could anyone give me chemical composition/formulae....
Can it be replaced by equivalent ?

Dear European Clayarters : Same questions, any address of =
supplier/distributor on the continent ?

Thanks for all usefull information.
And thanks, Ababi, for the receipt. Shalom to you.

Wally. First daytime frost in Flanders now.

Dear Wally,

Ultrox is an opacifier. You can use zirconium,
zircopax--whatever your favorite opacifier might
be. If you switch to a non-zirconium opacifier, it
will change the look of the glaze and you'll need
to adjust the quantity.

Wally,
Ultrox is an opacifier. SiO2 KNaO2 65
Zircopax would be a good substitute SiO2 34.28 KNaO2 64.88 CaO.22

Hope this helps, Mia in ABQ

Dear Wally,
It is an opacifier and I use Zircopax like product here called Zircon 5
with good results.

Best regards,

Cerama also supplies it.

Ultrox is a zirconium silicate - an opasifier - like zircopax and superpax
- zirconium silicates are all very similar. I would think any zirconium
silicate would do but mesh size has an effect.

Does finer mesh mean more or less opasification??? anyone???

Ultrox
ZrO2 - 65%
SiO2 - 35%

Zircopax ..... Superpax (superpax is finer then zircopax)
ZrO - 64.7 ..... 63.8
SiO2 - 33.8 ..... 34.3

Plus trace amounts of Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, and LOI of 0.75 and 1.0

There is no sodium or potassium present.

My supplier for a while had a light gray material they had a name in
Hebrew I think something like "Powdered zircon".
It gave me nice mottled effect. Latter they moved to a white powder,
ultrox as they said finer grinding that was all the different. Since
than I cannot get that mottling effect. I have asked them, they have a
serious adviser. They "convinced" me that probably there was another
reason for the disappearing of the mottling. Since than, every
supplier, from the few in Israel, i talk to, I ask if his Zircon
silicate is fine grinned or not. Probably they buy it all from the same
importer!

The KNaO here should be ZrO2 - there is no KNaO (short for K2O&Na2O) in
either superpax or Ultrox.
