how to get deeper throwing rings?

Another question to throw out to the group and hopefully I'll get some =
advice. HOW does one consistently get those nice deep throwing rings? =
Sometimes it just happens. How I have no idea. Usually my throwing =
rings are about even on both sides of the pot, closely spaced. I've =
learned how to place my fingers to pull inwards, or outwards. My walls =
are very even all the way down. I can throw reasonable thin walls. I =
can pull up nice even 8" cylinder now in 3, sometimes 4 pulls. I can =
make a coffee mug in 3 pulls with one more to shape it.

But I cannot make those deeper throwing rings happen at will. And when =
it does happen, it's always only on the outside, never the inside.

Dear Marianne,

Why would you want throwing rings on the inside?
That makes it devilishly hard to eat from the
bowl-cup-whatever. Be that as it may, slow down
the wheel, dig in your fingers and pull up fairly
fast. You'll get the hang of just how fast after a
while. This will give you throwing rings.
Probably, after a time, you'll not want the
throwing rings. The ring pattern you describe (the
one you're doing automatically) is consistent with
a good steady hand and good control of the clay.
But throwing rings do make a nice decoration in
some cases. They're usually best on the outside of
functional pieces, however.

Best wishes,

Hi Marianne,
I find it is not so much as how many passes it takes to throw a vessel
(sounds like a Clayart Room joke..)
but your speed on the pass upwards.

I make a fast pass with my knuckle, instead of slow one with my finger
tips, to get wide and deep finger marks.

I like them very much because they give the vessel, short or tall, a
feeling of spinning out to the milky way.

Hope that can help you,
best regards, Alisa

Hi Cindy;

I want throwing rings on the inside/outside of bowls, up near the rim. I
like the look of a few good strong rings up by the rim. These are large
bowls, not soup/cereal size.

>From answers from different people on this subject, I think I am simply not
digging into the clay enough and perhaps pulling too slowly. I'll do some
more experimentation with it later on this evening.

Thanks,

Marianne

I have a trick for adding throwing rings - I set the shaped pot aside (still
attached to the bat) to set up just a little while I throw a couple more
pieces. Then I put the piece back on the wheel and make the rings in one
pass. Letting the piece harden up for awhile lets me make rings on a
"finished" piece without significantly changing its size or shape.
