kilns...kills...and klines

Greetings,
I'm planning to build a new kiln. Wood-fired of course with propane assist
for right now. When I get enough money, I'll switch over to power burners.
I'm going with a cantenary arch and casting the main arch, 10" thick and in
sections. I might even lay a layer of fiber over the casting for even
better insulation. For the front wall and the back wall, I'll use brick.
Layer of hard with a layer of soft...all tied together. I'm going to make
the exit flue adjustable for when I get the power burners...make it a dual
fuel kiln. I calculated roughly for the power burners...4 550,000 btu
burners. One in each corner, I'm going to put in knock out bricks for them.
Right now, I'm working on the size for the fire boxes, both internal and
external. External will be bourry boxes. I'm going to have fire boxes on
each side, in my opinion for a better firing. Bagwall, checkered. I'm
looking at roughly 48 cubic feet of stacking space with 79 cubic feet in the
chamber. I'm using 14x28x1 Acme Marls shelves. They've held up very well
in previous firings.

The reason why I'm doing this, is I've realized when I built my current
kiln, I made a lot of mistakes. Some of them to correct would mean a
complete tear down. I figured might as well just do it and build a kiln
I'll be happy with.

Steve, are the burners to bring the kiln up to a certain
temp and then use wood or wood/gas for the rest? I think
you may be a bit over powered with your burners. I've got
two 500,000 btu burners on my 50 cf flat top, and I never
get them more than half on. If I did, I believe I'd blast
the opposing wall into pudding. 2,200,000 btus is a LOT
of btus.

Steve -
I am curious why you are going for so much power. We have a kiln that size
firing on two power burners supplied with a maximum of 9 WCI of propane, and
we never turn the pressure up higher than 2.5 or 3 WCI. These two power
burners could fire a kiln of at least 150 cubic feet. You specify four
power burners of 550K BTUs each, so you are talking about 2.2M BTUs, which
is an absurd amount of power for a kiln that size.
Best wishes -
