HELLO.
i am looking for information about spray guns, specifically, i would like to
hear about specific brands, price, and where to get them. Right now i am
using one i bought at Lowes, it's just this $30 one that actually works
pretty well, aside from getting clogged sometimes. But it gives off more
mist than i would like and it doesn't quite have the volume i need to cover
large areas quickly. Any specific info would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Hello!
I have read the info in the archives about HVLP sprayers but most of the
ones that have been recommended are no longer available from Harbor Freight,
etc. So I was wondering if anyone can recomend some brand and model info on
HVLP that can run off of relatively small air compressors (8 scfm ratings or
less), and also price info. thanks!

"I was wondering if anyone can recomend some brand and model info on
HVLP that ....."

Paul,

can't recommend it directly as I have never SEEN one,
but yet tested one of these but.... the same harbor freight
folks have a "true" HVLP for $100.00(!?) In my last catalog
it was Item#44677-?RPH (think ? = 0/zero t). It is also a Central
Pneumatic product (made in china). the system includes
15feet of hose and a bottom feed gun (conventional: 1qt)
that looks like the one they sell for $60.

i use central pneu equipment for several other functions like
a high speed rotary device (like a dental tool). they run 8hrs
a day for months and only cost $50. my original german
electric motor cost over $200 to rebuild. they seem to me
to use great materials and incorporate some of the best
features from the best american/european guns.

i call this a "true" HVLP because it uses exactly that: low
pressure and high volume. not sure if this is like the
older and much more expensive systems that I saw back
years ago but if it is it will be run quietly and take much
less electricity. i don't like compressor noise.

sure would be nice if somebody will buy one of these
complete system HVLP babies and report on it - no
compressor needed of course. i would have in a minute
back when i was pricing compressors.

by the way the current item# 42430-?RPH (pg24) has a gun
for $49.99 that looks a lot like the ones i own - ie gravity feed
and all.

and can't resist also reporting that there is a Central Pneumatic
"Pancake compressor" 2HP, 4Gal for $99.99.

no connection with these folks whatsoever. find their catalogs
entertaining. never know what gems will be hidden between the
bolt puller sets and the lawn furniture and the model airplanes and
the tile cutters. i bought my first gun from them when the fine folks
that made my first gun wanted more than $40 for the replacement part
kit.. why not? the central pneu gun has lasted several times as
long already. well made. great materials in my book.

best luck,

Paul,
The Paasche #62 is not HVLP, but does spray with relatively little air
use, and at relatively low pressure--20 psi works fine. It has NO removable
parts to clean, so it's dirt simple to use. Eventually the nozzle will wear
out, from abrasion, though. Tiny glass bottles with it are small, but the
thread size is common and you can recycle a lot of plastic bottles for glaze
containers if you extend the dip tube with a little plastic tubing.
This isn't a great sprayer, but it sounds like it might work for you.
Available from Laguna and most ceramics supply houses in the U.S.
Good glazing!

does anyone have info on the harbor freight sprayer discussed online a few

months ago....looking for one for Christmas and wanted some feedback on model
and how well it works.....thanks..mike

I bought one this summer, which I use outdoors upwind, since I do not hav=
e
a spray booth. It works just fine, same as Kurt Wild said. It has a long
air tube so I leave the small, noisy compressor inside (near the electric
outlet) and work outdoors. I used it this summer in Colorado and again
these past 2 weeks with my pots resting on a plastic stool on the snow.

It's an HVLP, high volume, low pressure sprayer that cost $75 plus a $5
handling charge, more or less. No shipping charges.

I've been using their HVLP $49 sprayer on my single-fired pieces and it
works great...no complaints. I spray outdoors so to decrease compressor
noise I just set it up away from where I'm working and use a long hose.

Greetings all,
I'm in the market for a sprayer after much frustration with dipping =
and pouring larger pots. I've tried the paintec sprayer and like the =
results, but find it extremely labor intensive and awkward. I'm in the =
market for a "real" system. I've read the archives and some people had =
just purchased Harbor Freight's HVLP sprayer system #44677 and liked it =
after 2 or 3 kiln loads. Can any of you give me your experience with =
this equipment used over the long run? Have the nozzles worn out and =
needed replaced? It now retails for 99.00 from their web site. What =
about other spray guns and compressors out there? (eg, the critter, =
paasche, etc). I want something that is really meant to handle the =
abrasive nature of glazes and won't produce more frustration than I =
already have with the glazing process. Any review would be appreciated!
Thank you kindly,
Chris Gold

How long a run? Had mine a year and it still works just fine. I would not
trade it for any other system for spraying large pieces.

Chris -
You can find a lot of information in my Tooltimes column in the current
issue of Claytimes magazine. It is specifically about spray equipment,
including standard high-pressure guns, HVLP conversion guns, and true
turbine-driven HVLP systems. Quite a bit of the information was gathered
from Clayart members.

None of these systems are specifically made for spraying ceramic materials,
so there is always going to be considerable wear in the spray nozzles. You
still shouldn't have to replace nozzles more than once ever few years
(depending of course on how much you spray), so when you get your gun, just
buy a few replacement nozzles. Not all of the popular guns have replaceable
nozzles, so make sure you get a gun that does.
Good luck -
