Here are a few Albany slip recipes:
CASTLE ENGOBE 6^ ox/redux (my favorite)
7.95 Barium Carb
2.27 Lithium Carb
13.64 Whiting
25.00 Albany Slip
22.73 F-4 feldspar
28.41 OM-4 ball clay
+
13.64 Opax
2.27 Cobalt Carb
2.27 Manganese Diox
4.55 Rutile
This is a mottled matte gooey looking grey glaze,
but more stony that satiny. I like it best thick,
but it will hide fine detail. Because of the clay
content, I think it works best for one-shot firing,
applied to leather-hard clay. I make no claims
for food-safety, but it's spiffy on sculpture.
Clear glaze applied over it in patterns will make
cobalt-blue glossy streaky designs.
BURBOE GLAZE ^6 redux
6.8 Bone Ash
6.8 Barium Carb
11.4 Dolomite
2.3 Lithium Carb
22.7 Albany Slip
22.7 F-4 feldspar
27.3 OM-4 ball clay
+
9.1 Opax
4.5 Zinc Ox
2.3 RIO
2.3 Rutile
This is a mottled orange matte, brightest where
thickly applied. The colors also seem brighter in
reduction - in oxidation, it tends to be blah brown.
It shows texture if thin, but doesn't look as nice.
Again, no claims for food-safety. I also apply this
one to leather-hard clay.
HASKINVILLE GLAZE ^6 redux
2 Lithium Carb
2 Zinc Ox (calcined)
70 Albany Slip
12 Neph Sy
14 EPK
+
2 Copper Carb
This is a lovely glossy dark brown, slightly
transparent, with little tan speckles. In
oxidation, unfortunately, it looks truly nasty,
sort of an army-green color. Another good one
for one-shot firing; apply to leather-hard clay.
I'm guessing it's probably food-safe, but I've
never tested it. <----(BIG DISCLAIMER!)
Here is a more 'classic' Albany glaze for ^6:
BEANPOT BROWN GLOSS ^4-6
87.5 Albany slip
12.5 Neph Sy
1.0 Bentonite
Very traditional-looking. I'm guessing it's
probably foodsafe, too.
OPAQUE CHOCOLATE MATTE ^6
83.0 Albany Slip
10.8 Lithium Carb
6.0 Rutile
0.2 RIO
I have doubts about the food-safety of this one;
seems like a lot of lithium to me. I'd save it
for sculpture, personally.
(I think the first three of these recipes came
from an old CM, years ago, but I cannot credit
the actual source of any of them. Sorry.)

Snail - Thanks so much for sharing the recipes. The castle engobe sounds
really interesting. Can't wait to give them a try. Appreciate your time
and effort. Judith
