It is not what Santa ordered but it is what we needed to do. We stopped
making for Santa a few weeks ago and made for the wood kiln. Stupid, I know
but we were just plain tired of carbon trap shino from our gas kiln. Nice
pots but we needed to make some pots that we didn't know what to expect. the
kiln has been unprotected since spring and so it was soaking wet. We heard a
post or shelve pop, bang, when we got red heat- shit, double shit. part of
the load shifted and tipped. We fired the kiln with shagbark hickory which
has one of the highest BTU ratings of any wood. We put a cord of maple into
steaming the kiln, a cord of shagbark into the firing and a cord of cherry
thin strips into side stoking wood ontop of the pots at the back. chris the
engineer wanted wabi sabi (the art of imperfection) so we gave him wabi sabi
English style. that's imperfection with a decent handle.
some pots will be wasters due to the accident but here's hoping that there
will be a couple that will be the best of 2001.
Shag your kiln.
It only hurts for a little while.
cheers,
Tony
