I am fortunate to be traveling to Tokyo on Christmas Day and will be there
until January 3. Does anyone know if there will be any pottery shows going
on when I will be there? We will be staying in Tokyo this trip.

Hi,
There is a magazine called "Tokyo Journal" which might be in the hotel
book store and many hotels have a free news sheet called "The Weekender".
Either or both might have information on pottery shows. Your hotel could
also have a tourist information desk with that kind of data. Many of the
big department stores have shows of one kind or the other and they always
have sections devoted to pottery(crafts). The Japan Times newspaper lists
what is showing around town once a week; I think it is in Friday's paper -
I don't get that paper so am not sure. There are a lot of interesting
shops dealing in pottery in Kamakura. It's an hour or so train ride from
Shinjuku. In Harajuku, Tokyo is a shop called "Oriental Bazaar" which has
lots or antiques( like) made tomorrow, but still, it is an interesting
place to visit. Then, you could always take a one day trip up to Mashiko
and drop in shops having a huge variety of pots - it'll make you head swim.
The national museum in Ueno is worth a visit if you can squeeze it in.
Years ago there was a New Year's morning "sunrise" NOH performance in
Yasukuni Jinja(attendance free - way back then) and it is only one short
section of a whole play. I don't know if it is still held, and if you
don't mind the morning cold it is another experience you can add to your
memoirs. Keep your camera handy because it is a real picture taking time
of the year here. I'm jotting these things down off the top of my head.
Hope some of it helps. Enjoy your visit.

Hi Louise,
I am not aware of any specific exibit at this time of the year. But, often
major department stores in Japan have exibits of good quality. Try calling
Mitsukoshi department store and Takashimaya in Tokyo. They might be able to
help you. Good luck. I wish I were going. Mariko

Louise, I thought of something else that might help. There is a Japanese
pottery magazine called "Tojiro" which lists shows. It is not all
inclusive and has places all over Japan, but you just might find something
of interest. Also, just looking at the beautiful color pictures of the
pots made here is worth the purchase.
