C TRIPP WROTE:
Mike Bailey's Cone ^6 Glaze book has quite a few glazes using both
lithium
carb and zinc oxide. I haven't tried any of them but I bet there must
be
some Clayarters out there who have? Anybody?

BTW, I've only tried the Orange Red Iron Base Glaze and I used Spodumene

because I didn't have any Lithium Carb; changed the recipe accordingly
to
agree with the formula analysis. No surprise, but my tests didn't look
a
thing like Mike's, though they were reddish. I then got some Lithium
Carb
and tried it again, and all I got was YUK brown.

I have been working with some glazes at cone 04 which use lithium and
zinc both.
I often use zinc in the form of zinc zirconium silicate, but sometimes
use zinc oxide.
Zinc will cause formation of brown tones rather than green tones with
any chrome in the batch, drastically changing colors with any stains or
coloring oxides with chrome as a component. In another glaze, when using
brown stains in the glaze, a bit of zinc oxide or seems to brighten up
the brown tones, pulling them away from green , murky overtones and
spicing them up to better orange, gold and red browns.
I use lithium carb as well as some spodumene along with zinc.
I have noticed that in my tests , spodumene promotes the reddish browns
and reddish tones, especially where the glaze breaks allowing red clay
color to show through. It seems to interact well with iron from red clay
body.

Of course this info is SO general and not specific to your particular
glaze.
I am STILL searching for a gorgeous rich terra cotta color semi matte
glaze for cone 04-02, as well as the perfect matte or semi matte cream,
or breaking cream / tan glaze for my red clay at that temp.
But in the meantime I have found some yummy ones in that vicinity and
find the above ingredients quite useful at low temps.
