Hello clayfolks,

There's nothing like last minute - but here I am visiting the folks for Christmas in the "boonies" of Umatilla, Florida (about an hour N? of Orlando) and wondering what wonderful potteries are hiding out in this area? (Visits to local tourist traps have thus far been unproductive.) Can anyone point me towards a nifty clay spot to visit between trips with the kids to the very altar of commercialism?

Nancy (who never suspected anyplace could make her "homesick" for Ohio)

Hello,
I no longer live in Orlando, but there are a few potteries in the area. The
one I worked at for several years just closed and the potter has sort of
moved on. However, Steve Jepson has his studio near Orlando. It is in
Geneva, FL which is north east of Orlando. If you go to jepsonpottery.com
you will find the info you need. I know him a little, he is a very
interesting guy. I almost went to work for him a couple of years ago. He has
quite a studio and classroom facility. Another pottery/gallery is in Oviedo,
FL called The Artistic Hand which is run by Barbara and Dell Seaman. I sell
some of my pots there and they are really nice and fun to visit. Oviedo is
where Axner's Pottery Supply is and that may also be a good place to visit
if you are looking for supplies down the road.

There are many others, but most of the ones I knew have moved or are a
little private. If you meet any of the afore mentioned people, ask them for
other references about local potters and studios. I think they will help.

Have a good trip,
Chris Jones

Hi Chris,
I must have missed that message and query about Orlando pottery places.
We live in Brevard County, 50 miles east of Orlando on the coast. I'm
familiar with alot of wonderful Clay Places.
As you mentioned, Stephen Jepson's Pottery & shop are NE of Orlando .
His work is either thrown or press-molded & fired ^10 reduction. He runs his
1 & 2 week ($400/week/student - no room or board or firing - he teaches the
process only!) "World Pottery Institute" classes in his open air studio.
Axner Pottery Supply is in Oviedo (west side of Orlando) and Bennett
Pottery (supply) is in Ocoee (NW side of Orlando. (I can e-mail 1-800#s if
anyone wants them).
The Crealde`Art center offers excellent classes and there are several
community colleges and the Univ. of Central FL, all with excellent ceramic
departments!
Locally, there is production potter, Greg Wooten, in Cocoa Village. He
does mainly gorgeous ^10 porcelain, and some stoneware. He shares his
studio with Harry Phillips, a bird and fish sculptor who does really neat,
funky stuff.
Unfortunately, our oldest and longest working Resident World Class Potter,
Mel Casper of Merritt Island, is extremely ill and has closed his wonderful
pottery located on the banks of the Indian River. Until recently, he made
all his own clay BY HAND (no pugmill) & he's pushing 90. He built his own
reduction kiln in the 1920's, I think, but only oxidation fired it - which
gave his work a very unique look. Many of his red clay with deep turquoise
glaze pieces are collector's items. He made Christmas commemorative discs
each year and had a huge mailing list of his regular customers.
There are lots of "small-time: potters (we don't make our livings at it)
who have their work in several Galleries and the Cocoa Village crafts co-op
where I sell my work. Cocoa Village also boasts of the Ococo Gallery, the
Art Vue, and the Native American gallery called The Sun Dancer Gallery, plus
a few clay and canvas artists in small shops and galleries in the Village.
There is Horse Creek Pottery (which I have only recently learned about
myself) in Melbourne, just north of the Pineda Causeway. The only other art
gallery I know of is the 5th Ave. Gallery on Highland Ave. in Melbourne. A
"world class" sculptress, Ellen Pavlakos, shows her wonderful (& huge) cast
bronze work there.
For a larger variety of hand crafted items, the shops of Winter Park and
Disney's Lake Buena Vista can be visited. [Some of you looking for places
to sell your work might consider Lake Buena Vista - They have a huge fine
arts show there every year - in Feb I think & the merchants have been know
to buy shown work, etc...]
Hope this fills in some gaps for ClayArters visiting Central Florida.
Our temps are in the 60's these days and mostly sunny. Right now it is our
Other season: "Not-Summer", and will last approximately until mid to late
April. After that we go directly to Summer (95+ temps & humidity) - 8
months of it!
