While it is possible to put ITC or kiln wash on
Silicon Carbide shelves, I've often wondered why
people do it.
I thought the point of all the extra expense of
silicon carb. shelves was that they are nearly
impervious to the corrosive action of
salt/wood/soda/etc. After you've coated the shelf
thinly on one side and used it alot, it starts to
warp. Eventually, they all do. So you turn it over to
fire it hump side up. Now you've a thick layer of
grungey, flaky shelf wash on the underside of your
shelf, just begging to fall into your pots.
Yes, you have to chip/scrape shelves; but using
kiln wash has rarely saved me that step when I've had
an accident. Besides, there is some maintenance of the
wash, whether it's ITC or kiln wash.
Just wondering.
