Suzanne;
Without Prejudice
With all this talk about sharing recipes and copyright, I am interested to
know if Larkbooks is paying the artists copyright fees for the use of their
photos, once they are juried into the book?
If so what is the going rate?

On behalf of the artist's whose work makes it into this book, I think we
should all consider requesting a free/discounted copy of the book for our
contribution:
--we made the work
--we either photographed it or had it photographed and thus incurred
expenses
What do all you folks think?

I have been accepted for 3 books published by Lark (the latest is the 500
teapots) that is their normal way of doing things... each artist who is in
the book gets one free copy... so, unless something is changing, and i don't
think it is... you don't need to worry...

OK, I didn't realize--it just had mentioned "tear sheets" for the artists.
Thank you!

Ah, Bob
I'm not sure about you, but I am sick and tired of the artists being taken
advantage of and letting themselves be taken advantage of--especially when
we are scrambling to make a living, be known, provide a service to our
culture, whatever. I suggested only that we receive something in exchange.
I read that we would receive "tear sheets" and I suspect that is like a
proof of the page our work is on--someone please correct me if I am wrong,
but big deal--I will already have a picture of my work! Yes it's cool to
get into a book (I imagine) and that is enough for me to submit, but come
on, a complimentary copy is not out of line as a fair exchange.
I am curious, did you provide anything in exchange for the effort and work
and generosity of the folks who supplied you with materials?
Thank you.

Tony,
I have never been a book publisher, but I have owned a CD-ROM
publishing company, and we used lots of contributed materials
on our disks. Let me tell you, publishing is NOT a high-profit business,
especially for a small publisher. The reason most publications don't
pay for contributions of photos is simply that they can't afford to.
My suggestion is that anyone who wants to see their work included
send in submissions. If you don't want to be included unless you're
paid in some way, then don't submit.

Bob;
It is strange that the small publishing house does not have enough money to
pay for the photo images of artists, yet it has enough to pay everyone else
in the food chain of publishing.
What a crock.

From the recent discussion, it looks like Lark provides a complimentary
copy of the book. Tear sheets can also be nice for sending to galleries,
depending on how many copies Lark provides. But whatever Lark offers,
it's up to each individual to decide if they want to submit. If you don't
like the deal, don't send in photos.
>I am curious, did you provide anything in exchange for the effort and work
>and generosity of the folks who supplied you with materials?
We produced several CD-ROMs that used contributed materials. One CD
was about dogs, and used over 500 photos of dog breeds and dog activities.
Our other CDs were educational titles introducing children to various
cultures through their music and art. These required photos of traditional
costumes and artwork, short musical performances, and videos of folk art
performances. Contributors were included in the credits, and had the
opportunity to purchase copies of the CDs at our production cost. We also
made an arrangement with a local college to have students work for free
on our video and audio production, in exchange for on-the-job training,
production credits, and course credit. (I also wrote a recommendation for
one of the students to a graduate school program he was applying to.)
Without these cost savings, we would not have been able to produce
the CDs at all. We certainly did not make a lot of money on them.
There were some people who turned down our requests for contributions,
which was fine with me. Others were delighted to play a part in the
production, and I don't believe anyone felt taken advantage of.
