Does anyone have a recipe for black stain?? preferably Robin Hopper's I seem
to have lost my copy in my chaotic organization.

In Robin Hoppers Ceramic Spectrum book he has 3 black stains listed ... I
will type them out for you but it also says that preparation methods are in
chapter 14 ... if you need that imfo please email me and I will look it
up...

This is from Richard Behrens, A Formulary of leadless Glazes.
Black Mix
31 Cobalt Oxide
7 Green Chromium Oxide
37 Red Iron Oxide
12 Manganese Dioxide CAUTION
13 Nickel Oxide CAUTION
This mix is an additives for glazes, but it may work for a stain. I have=20
not tried it as a stain or under a transparent glaze.

My files also contain this mix that Robin Hopper included in an
article he wrote for Ceramics Monthly sometime ago:
20 Cr2O3 (chromiumn oxide)
20 CoO (cobalt oxide)
20 Fe2O3 (red iron oxide)
20 MnO2 (manganese dioxide)
8 Feldspar (any)
8 Kaolin (any)
4 Slicia/flint (fine powder)
Dry blend these ingredients, then use 5% (+/-) of the blended mix in a
base glaze to obtain a black colour. It should work in any kiln
atmosphere (oxidizing or reducing).
