Hi, I'd like to correspond to those who have built salt kilns. I have almost enough hard brick to build a smallish sized kiln. I also have 300 pounds of castable mix. I was thinking of building an up draught kiln. Any ideas? Jim

Hi Jim,
I'm no expert but I have a salt kiln that I have been firing for about 6 =
yrs now. It's a downdraft, hardbrick interior with softbrick extreior. =
Sprung arch. Burner port size, exit flue, and flue are all based on =
Nils Lou MFT design. It is 45" wide x45" deep and 53" to the inside of =
the arch. Nice size for me...three 12x24 shelves deep. Salt ports =
above the burner ports. My chimney is a 12" dia. culvert pipe that sits =
on top of the flue box. Length 16 ft. . My last stack lasted for 22 =
firing before the rust ate it. I fire with two venturi type burners
I think you'd loose a lot of salt vapor in an updraft. Seems you'd put =
it in and it would go right out the top. I don't know, but it's no =
problem to build a downdraft, I have had great results in mine. My door =
bricks up, I used soft brick for this that were dipped in a watered =
down mixture of greenpatch w. some alumina added. It's held up well.
If you need more info. feel free to contact me. =20
By the way I fire raw ware to cone 10 in 18-24 hrs including the =
preheat.

Hi Jim,
I have a salt chamber between the anagama chamber and the chimney. It's
a cross draft arrangement, a catenary arch with the firebox on one side
and the flues on the other. An Updraft doesn't sound like a good idea to
me because cross or downdraft designs circulate the gasses instead of
sending them straight up and out. I want to allow as much interaction
between sodium vapors and the clay as is possible.
So I'd say get scrounging, and find enough bricks for a chimney.

Dear Jim Bozeman,=20

Was involved in building one at college and have built two for my self.

I prefer either down draft of cross draft to hold the salt in the kiln =
for as long as possible.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

OK - so this is soda, not salt - I thought it might be interesting anyway -
possibly a more viable alternative in some locations.

web site is of some friends of mine about an hour's drive from
Bournemouth...
