resinate lustres

Dear Corbus Potgieter,
Thank you for you note. I am sure others on the list will be interested =
in my reply.
I think the way the word Resin is used can cause some confusion. I =
prefer to say Rosin when talking about making Resinate Lustres.
Resins are to the best of my knowledge forms of exudations from plants =
in general which set into solid lumps as well as a lot of the new =
synthetic materials which, when mixed, set to become hard materials, eg. =
Araldite Casting Resins.
I understand Rosin to be specific to coniferous trees which exude a =
balsam that can be distilled to give a spirit turpentine and leave a =
residue which sets to become a clear, yellow, amorphous material which =
melts at a fairly low temperature and is soluble in hot, light essential =
oils, eg lavender and eucalyptus.
Chemically Rosins seem to be either composed of Terpenes or Terpene =
Polymers and include stuff like Amber.
I think the thing to ask for is "Wood Resin", though my bags are clearly =
marked "Rosin" and it is not water soluble in the same way that Gum =
Arabic, or soluble in Alcohol as Shellac, which is regarded as a resin, =
is.
As you say, there is almost nothing in the literature about these =
decorative materials and so far I have had only mixed and very limited =
success in making them.
My best regards to you,
Ivor Lewis.

Hi Ivor,
I sent this message to the general list. I only realised it after I =
sent it. Sometimes it takes a day or two to be posted. That is why I =
am sending it again, directly to you.
Regrards,
Cobus.

Dear Ivor,
Can you also send the information to me? Textbook information about =
this
subject is very limited. Some recipes refer to pine resin, other to =
gum
arabic, and then I found one that referred to ROSIN. Is rosin just =
another
term for resin, or what is it?
I would appreciately your help greatly.
Regards,
Cobus Potgieter.

Dear Joan Ashworth,
=20
I was taught how to make Resin lustres by Greg Daly. Part of the =
information
I originally sent to Aliakbar contained his recipe, which comes by =
the way
from Cullen Parmellee if I recall the event correctly.

Ferric (Iron3) chloride with Rosin gives a superb orange with a =
metallic
sheen on bathroom tiles which are a good, ready made, test tile for =
the low
temperature decorating materials.

But the Chemistry of resinates is still a big mysterious black hole.

It has been interesting to read Marci and Paul's comments regarding the
level of interest from ceramists in Overglaze techniques. I maintain a
website http://overglaze.info which looks at Overglaze from a ceramist's=3D=

perspective. This is a long term project which is periodically updated. =

I
have recently added the article I was invited to write for The Journal of=
