Thanks to Tim for his confirmation of the 'cone
freeze' phenomenon!
I'd always heard of it, and even seen what appeared
to be examples of it, (e.g. cone 6 down, cone 5 up)
but was never sure that was really the cause, or
whether it was another 'old potter's tale'.
Tim, can you confirm or debunk another aspect of
'cone freeze' that I've heard of? That if a kiln
'stalls out' for an extended period of time (for
many hours) just below the temperature of a cone,
that cone can freeze and not drop when that
temperature is finally reached? (I've seen cases
of what appeared to be this phenomenon, but with
so many variables at work, I was never really
certain of the cause. (Might have been too much
checking the peephole, waiting for the dang thing
drop, that froze it instead!)
